We’ve all heard "Film is dead!" a hundred-gazillion times, mostly bellowed by those who, really, don't know any better. My personal and professional feelings on the subject have been made fairly clear over the years in public forums – film will NEVER die – but it will, eventually, be replaced as the PRIMARY medium of choice for motion pictures – and probably within my lifetime (assuming I don't walk outside tomorrow and get hit by a bus). Today's Blog is less about the hypothetical impending (and over-hyped) death of film – but rather about an observation that is quickly leading to the death of a motion picture standard: the 1.85:1 aspect ratio. In my Blog back in November on Film Look: Widescreen I explained the history of the most common aspect ratios. In Part II of that Blog, I talked about the genesis of 16x9 or 1.78:1. Not meaning to re-tread on old territory here, but it's important to quickly refresh a little bit about aspect ratios. In the most Reader's Digest Condensed version: aspect rations (other than 4:3 or 1.33:1) were invented to help compete with the advent of television and make theatergoing a spectacle that couldn't be had at home. Other "gimmicks" were employed at this same time – in addition to widescreen – such as 3D, Stereo sound, Smell-o-vision... you get the picture.
